VAT Calculator South Africa: Complete Guide to Value-Added Tax (2025-2026)
What is VAT in South Africa?
Value-Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax levied on the value added to goods and services at each stage of production and distribution. In South Africa, VAT is administered by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and is one of government’s primary revenue sources.
As of the current tax year, South Africa operates a standard VAT rate of 15%, increased from 14% in April 2018. This rate applies to most goods and services consumed in the country.
Current VAT Rates in South Africa (2025-2026)
| VAT Rate | Applicability |
|---|---|
| 15% | Standard rate for most goods and services |
| 0% | Zero-rated supplies (exports, basic food items, petrol, diesel) |
| Exempt | Financial services, residential rental, educational services |
Zero-Rated vs. Exempt: What is the Difference?
- Zero-rated (0%): VAT is charged at 0%, and the supplier can claim input VAT on related expenses.
- Exempt: No VAT is charged, and the supplier cannot claim input VAT on related expenses.
How to Calculate VAT in South Africa
Formula 1: Adding VAT to a Price (Exclusive to Inclusive)
VAT Amount = Price Excl. VAT x 0.15
Price Incl. VAT = Price Excl. VAT x 1.15
Example: Price excl. VAT = R1,000, VAT = R150, Total incl. VAT = R1,150.
Formula 2: Removing VAT from a Price (Inclusive to Exclusive)
Price Excl. VAT = Price Incl. VAT / 1.15
VAT Amount = Price Incl. VAT - Price Excl. VAT
Example: Price incl. VAT = R2,300, Price excl. VAT = R2,000, VAT = R300.
Quick tip: To estimate VAT from an inclusive price, multiply by 0.1304 (13.04%).
