Checking Your UIF Status on WhatsApp

A lot of people ask whether UIF has a WhatsApp line. Here's what we could actually confirm, what to be careful of, and the channels that are guaranteed to be safe.

We looked into this properly rather than just repeating what other guides say, because giving out the wrong contact number for a service tied to your ID number and banking details is not something to get wrong. Here's where things stand.

What We Could Actually Confirm

The Department of Employment and Labour's official contact listing gives a switchboard number, a call centre number (0800 030 007), an email address and links to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. No WhatsApp number appears there.

A few independent guides mention a UIF WhatsApp service, but they don't match each other on the actual number, which is a red flag on its own. Until there's one number confirmed directly on an official UIF or Department of Employment and Labour page, we're not going to publish it here as fact. If UIF opens or confirms an official WhatsApp line, we'll update this page and link to it directly.

Why This Matters More Than It Seems

UIF related scams on WhatsApp are common in South Africa, usually messages claiming your grant or claim needs "verification" and asking for your ID number, banking PIN or a once off payment to release funds. UIF will never ask for your password or PIN over WhatsApp, and it will never ask you to pay a fee to receive a payment that's owed to you.

If you get a message like this, don't reply or click any links. Rather check your claim directly through one of the verified methods below, and report the message if you can.

Verified Ways to Check Your Status

These are the methods we could confirm directly, and they cover almost everyone.

UIF Online (for benefit claims and status)

Employee benefit claims and status checks are handled through uifonline.labour.gov.za, not the uFiling site. uFiling is now used by employers to register staff and pay contributions, while UIF Online is where you check your own claim, balance and payment status. Log in with your ID number and password to see your case details.

USSD

Dial *134*843# from any cellphone, no internet or app needed. Choose Claims or Payments, enter your ID number, and follow the prompts.

Call centre

Call 0800 030 007 with your ID number ready. This is the one number that's confirmed directly by the Department of Employment and Labour, so it's the safest option if you'd rather speak to a person or you're not sure about a message you've received.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does UIF have an official WhatsApp number?

We couldn't confirm one directly on the Department of Employment and Labour's own contact page. If you've seen a number claiming to be UIF's WhatsApp line, treat it carefully and rather verify through the call centre first.

Is it safe to send my ID number to a WhatsApp number claiming to be UIF?

Only if you've verified the number yourself through an official source. Scammers regularly impersonate government services on WhatsApp, so don't send personal details to a number you found in a random post or forwarded message.

What should I do if I already messaged a suspicious UIF WhatsApp number?

Stop replying, don't send any further details or payments, and check your actual claim through UIF Online, USSD or the call centre. If you shared banking details, contact your bank as well.

Will UIF ever ask me to pay money to release my claim?

No. UIF payments are funded from your own and your employer's contributions. Any message asking for a fee to "release" or "process" your payment is not from UIF.
