Check UIF Status Online in South Africa
See exactly where your UIF claim stands, through uFiling, USSD or a call to the UIF call centre. Below we explain what each status actually means and what to do when nothing seems to move.
You can check your UIF status online through the official uFiling portal, by USSD, or by calling the UIF call centre. The portal shows your claim status, payment history, balance and available credits in one place, so it's worth checking regularly rather than waiting for UIF to contact you. UIF does not always notify you when something needs your attention, so a status you don't recognise or a claim that hasn't moved in weeks is often the first sign of a problem.
How to Check Your UIF Status on uFiling
uFiling is the official online system for UIF, and it's the most complete way to check your claim. It shows your case number, current status, payment history and any notes left by an assessor. Here's how to get to it.
- Go to the uFiling website. Visit the official uFiling login page at ufiling.labour.gov.za.
- Log in with your ID number. Use your South African ID number and password. If you don't have an account yet, register first and activate it through the email or SMS link before you try to check a claim.
- Open Benefit Payments. From your dashboard, select Benefit Payments, then View My Claims.
- Read your status. You'll see your case number, current status and any payment updates. If it says Sent to Assessor, for example, your claim is simply under review.
How to Check Your UIF Status by USSD
If you don't have data or a smartphone handy, you can still check your status from any basic cellphone using USSD. This works on all South African mobile networks and doesn't cost anything beyond the call itself.
- Dial *134*843# on your cellphone.
- Wait for the menu to load, then choose Claims or Payments.
- Enter your ID number when asked.
- Follow the prompts to view your status or payment information.
USSD is a good option if you're on a limited airtime budget, or if you're helping a family member who doesn't use a smartphone check their claim.
WhatsApp, Phone and In Person
uFiling and USSD cover most people, but there are a few backup options worth knowing about, especially if the portal is slow or you'd rather speak to someone directly.
- Call centre
- Call the UIF call centre on 0800 030 007 with your ID number ready. An agent can look up your claim and tell you where it stands.
- Labour Centre
- Visit your nearest Labour Centre in person if your claim needs manual attention. Bring your ID and any UIF paperwork you have.
- Online, off uFiling
- The Department of Employment and Labour website also has a UIF section that links through to the same uFiling login, useful if you land there first from a search.

What Each UIF Status Means
UIF statuses aren't always self explanatory. Here's a plain language breakdown of the ones you're most likely to see, whether it relates to your claim or your payment.
Claim statuses
| Pending | Your claim has been received and is still being reviewed. No action needed from you yet. |
| Sent to Assessor | A UIF assessor is checking your documents and details. This is a normal step, not a rejection. |
| Parked | Your claim is on hold, usually because a document is missing or something needs to be corrected. |
| Completed by Assessor | The assessment is done, but payment may still take a bit longer to process separately. |
| Auto Close | The claim closed automatically, often due to inactivity. It can usually still be followed up or reopened. |
| Cancelled | The application or a specific payment request was stopped, either by you, your employer, or UIF. |
Payment statuses
| Payment Processed | Your payment has been approved and sent through. It should reflect in your account within a few working days. |
| Payment Reversed | The payment didn't go through, usually because the banking details don't match your ID or surname. |
| Payment Blocked | Something needs to be fixed before payment can continue, often banking verification or an outstanding document. |
| Payment Finalised | Your payment cycle is complete, or you've used up your available credit days. |
If your status says Payment Blocked or Payment Reversed, check your UI-2.8 banking details first. That's the most common cause of both.
Checking Your UIF Balance and Credits
There isn't really a separate UIF balance number like you'd see in a bank account. What people usually mean by UIF balance is two things: your available credit days, and how much of your current claim has already been paid out. Both show up in the same place.
Log into uFiling and open Benefit Payments, then View My Claims, to see your remaining credit days and full payment history for the claim. Your credit days build up while you work and get used up while you claim, roughly one day of benefit for every four days you were employed.
If your credits look lower than you expected, it's often because your employer hasn't declared your contributions correctly. Read our guide on missing UIF contributions, see how credit days work, or go straight to how to check your UIF balance for a dedicated walkthrough.
Why Your UIF Status Hasn't Changed
It's common for a UIF claim to sit in the same status for weeks, and it's not always a sign that something is wrong. A few things usually explain it.
- Banking verification delays. UIF checks that your bank account matches your ID before releasing payment, and this step can take time.
- Missing employer declarations. If your employer hasn't submitted your contribution records, UIF can't confirm your claim details.
- High claim volumes. Processing slows down during periods when UIF receives a large number of claims at once.
- Incomplete documents. A missing UI-19 or banking form is one of the most common reasons a claim stalls.
If your status hasn't moved in four weeks or more, contact the UIF call centre or visit your Labour Centre rather than waiting it out. It's also worth reading our guide on why UIF claims get rejected or cancelled and checking that you've submitted everything on our UIF documents needed checklist.
How Long UIF Payments Last
How long you can keep receiving UIF payments depends on your accumulated credit days, not a fixed number of months. As a general guide, unemployment claims can run for up to 365 days, and maternity or adoption claims for up to 121 days, though your actual entitlement depends on your contribution history.
