How to Change Your SASSA Phone Number
Lost your phone, got a new number, or need to update the cellphone linked to your SASSA SRD application? Here is how to do it, whether you still have access to your old number or not.
Why Your Phone Number Matters
Your registered cellphone number is central to your SASSA SRD experience. It is used for:
- OTP verification – every time you check your status, appeal a decline, or update your details, SASSA sends a one-time PIN to this number.
- Payment notifications – SMS alerts about approval, payment dates, and cash send vouchers go to this number.
- Status checks – the number is required alongside your ID number to check your status online.
If your number is wrong or you have lost access to it, you essentially cannot interact with the SRD system until it is fixed.
Method 1: Online (If You Still Have the Old Number)
This is the fastest option, but it only works if you can still receive SMSes on the old number.
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za
- Look for "Update Cellphone Number" or "Change Contact Details"
- Enter your 13-digit ID number
- SASSA sends an OTP to your old (current registered) number – enter it to verify
- Enter your new cellphone number
- Confirm the change. Your new number is now linked to your application
The change takes effect immediately. You can now use the new number for status checks, appeals, and OTP verification.
Method 2: In Person at a SASSA Office (If You Lost the Old Number)
If you no longer have access to the old cellphone number at all – the SIM was lost, stolen, or the number was recycled by your network – you cannot verify online. In this case, you need to visit a SASSA office.
- Find your nearest SASSA office – you can search on the SASSA website or call 0800 60 10 11 to ask
- Bring your original ID document (ID book or smart card)
- Tell the staff you need to update the cellphone number on your SRD application
- They will verify your identity in person and update the number on the system
- The change may take a day or two to reflect on the online portal
Important Tips
- Do not let someone else change your number for you. Scammers have been known to change applicants' phone numbers to redirect OTPs and steal payments. Only change your number yourself, either online or in person at a SASSA office.
- Keep your SIM card safe. If you lose your phone, contact your network provider to get a replacement SIM with the same number. This is often easier than going through SASSA's change process.
- Update quickly. If you know your number has changed, update it with SASSA as soon as possible. Delaying means you miss OTPs, payment notifications, and may not be able to appeal or check your status.
- RICA your new number. Make sure your new cellphone number is RICA'd in your own name. SASSA may cross-check this in future.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my phone number on WhatsApp?
No. The SASSA WhatsApp service (082 046 8553) is for checking your status, not for updating your details. You need to use the SRD website or visit a SASSA office.
Will changing my number affect my application?
No. Changing your phone number does not affect your approval or payment. It only changes which number receives OTPs and notifications.
Can I use someone else's phone number?
Technically yes, but it is strongly discouraged. All OTPs and payment notifications will go to that person, which creates a security risk. Use your own number wherever possible.
How long does the number change take to process?
Online changes are usually instant. In-person changes at a SASSA office may take one to two business days to reflect on the system.
