When Should You Appeal?

An appeal makes sense when you genuinely believe SASSA's automated system made an error. Common situations where an appeal is justified include:

  • Means test error. You were declined for "income source identified" but the money in your account was not regular income – for example, a stokvel payout, a refund, or a family member sending you emergency cash.
  • Identity verification failure. Your name or details on the application are correct but the system flagged a mismatch with Home Affairs records, possibly due to an outdated ID or a spelling error in their system.
  • Registered on another system. You were flagged as receiving UIF or NSFAS but your UIF claim ended before the SRD month, or your NSFAS funding was for a different period.
  • Deceased status error. Home Affairs records incorrectly show your ID number as deceased. This needs to be fixed with Home Affairs first, then appealed with SASSA.

Step-by-Step Appeal Process

Step 1: Go to the SRD portal

Open srd.sassa.gov.za and look for the "Appeal" or "Request for Reconsideration" link.

Step 2: Enter your details

Type in your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number linked to your SRD application.

Step 3: Verify with OTP

SASSA sends a one-time PIN to your registered cellphone. Enter it to prove you are the applicant. If you have changed your phone number, you need to update it first before you can appeal.

Step 4: Select the month

Each month is assessed separately. Select the specific month you want to appeal. You can appeal multiple months, but each one is treated as a separate case.

Step 5: Submit the appeal

Click submit. Take a screenshot of the confirmation for your records. There is no fee to appeal – if anyone asks you to pay, it is a scam.

What Proof Should You Keep Ready?

The online appeal form does not always ask for documents upfront, but having proof ready strengthens your case if SASSA follows up.

  • Bank statements. If declined for the means test, a bank statement showing the flagged deposit was not regular income can help. Highlight the specific transaction.
  • Proof of one-off payment. A message from the sender explaining a one-off family transfer, a refund receipt, or a stokvel agreement can demonstrate the deposit was not a salary.
  • UIF or NSFAS closure letter. If flagged as being on another system, proof that your UIF or NSFAS has ended before the SRD month can clear things up.
  • Home Affairs confirmation. For identity issues, a letter from Home Affairs confirming your details or correcting a deceased status flag.

How Long Does an Appeal Take?

There is no official guaranteed timeframe, but here is what to realistically expect:

  • Simple means test appeals: Often resolved within 2–4 weeks.
  • Identity verification appeals: Can take longer, especially if Home Affairs needs to update their records first.
  • Appeals involving multiple systems: Cross-checking with UIF, NSFAS, and SARS takes additional time. Allow 4–6 weeks.

If you have heard nothing after 6 weeks, follow up by calling the SASSA toll-free number on 0800 60 10 11 or visiting your nearest SASSA office with your ID.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I have to appeal?

You have 90 days from the date you were declined for that specific month. After 90 days, the window closes and you cannot appeal that particular month's decision.

Can I appeal more than one month?

Yes. Each month is a separate assessment. You can appeal each declined month individually, as long as each appeal is submitted within 90 days of that month's decline.

Does appealing guarantee approval?

No. An appeal is a request for SASSA to review its decision. If the original decline was correct based on the data, the appeal will also be declined. Appeals succeed when the automated system made an error.

Can I appeal at a SASSA office?

The appeal process is primarily online through srd.sassa.gov.za. However, if you cannot access the internet, a SASSA office may assist you in person. Bring your ID document.

Will I get back pay if my appeal is successful?

If your appeal for a specific month is successful, SASSA should pay you for that month. However, back payments can take time to process after the appeal decision.
