Before You Apply: Check Eligibility

Not everyone qualifies for the SRD grant. Before starting the application, make sure you meet all of these requirements.

  • Age: Between 18 and 59 years old.
  • Citizenship: South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylum seeker with valid documentation.
  • Income: Your total income from all sources must be under R624 per month.
  • No other grants: You must not be receiving any other SASSA grant.
  • Not on UIF or NSFAS: You cannot be receiving UIF payments or an NSFAS stipend at the same time.

For a detailed breakdown of who qualifies and what the means test involves, see our SASSA eligibility guide.

What You Need to Apply

Have these ready before you start. Missing any of them will slow down or block your application.

  • South African ID number. Your 13-digit ID number as it appears on your ID book or smart card.
  • Active cellphone number. You will receive a one-time PIN (OTP) on this number to verify your application. Make sure the phone is on and can receive SMSes.
  • Banking details (optional but recommended). A bank account in your own name. If you do not add banking details, SASSA may pay you via cash send or eWallet, which can be slower.
  • An email address (optional). SASSA may send notifications to your email, but it is not required to apply.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Go to the SRD website

Open srd.sassa.gov.za in your phone or computer browser. Look for the button or link that says "Apply for SRD" or "New Application."

Step 2: Enter your personal details

Fill in your 13-digit ID number, your name and surname as they appear on your ID, and your active cellphone number. Double-check spelling – a mismatch with Home Affairs records will cause a decline.

Step 3: Verify with OTP

SASSA sends a one-time PIN to the cellphone number you entered. Enter this PIN on the website to verify that the number belongs to you. The PIN expires after a few minutes, so enter it promptly.

Step 4: Add banking details

Enter your bank name, account type, and account number. The account must be in your own name – SASSA will not pay into someone else's account. If you do not have a bank account, you can skip this step, but it may delay your payment.

Step 5: Confirm and submit

Review everything on the summary screen. Once you are satisfied, click Submit. You should see a confirmation message. Keep a screenshot of this confirmation for your records.

Step 6: Wait for processing

After submitting, your application goes through SASSA's automated checks – identity verification, means test, UIF and NSFAS cross-checks. This can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. You can check your SASSA status at any time to see where your application stands.

What Happens After You Apply

Your application is not a once-off event. SASSA reassesses your eligibility every single month. Here is what to expect.

  • Monthly reassessment. Even after approval, SASSA checks your bank activity, employment status, and other records every month before releasing payment.
  • Status updates. Your status may change from month to month. Approved one month does not guarantee approval the next. Check your status regularly.
  • If declined. You have 90 days to appeal a decline. Being declined one month does not mean you cannot be approved the next.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wrong phone number. If you enter a number you do not have access to, you will not receive the OTP and cannot complete the application. If you need to change your number later, see our change phone number guide.
  • Name spelling mismatch. Your name must match your ID document and Home Affairs records exactly. Even small differences can trigger a decline.
  • Applying while on UIF or NSFAS. If you are currently receiving UIF or NSFAS, your SRD application will be declined automatically.
  • Using someone else's bank account. SASSA requires the bank account to be in your own name. Payments to third-party accounts are blocked.
  • Paying a "helper." No one can speed up or guarantee your application. Anyone asking for money to apply on your behalf is running a scam.
