SASSA Status Pending: What It Means and What to Do

Seeing "Pending" on your SASSA SRD status check is frustrating but usually normal. Here is what is happening behind the scenes, how long it takes, and when you should start worrying.

What Does Pending Actually Mean?

When your SASSA SRD status shows "Pending," it means SASSA has not yet finished processing your application for that specific month. It is not a decline, and it is not an approval – it is a holding state while the system works through its checks.

Every month, SASSA runs a fresh set of automated verifications on every SRD applicant. These checks include:

  • Identity verification against Home Affairs records.
  • Bank account screening to check deposits against the R624 means test threshold.
  • UIF cross-check to confirm you are not receiving unemployment benefits.
  • NSFAS cross-check to confirm you are not receiving student funding.
  • Other grant checks to confirm you are not already receiving another SASSA grant.

The system processes millions of applications, so not everyone's checks are completed at the same time. Being pending simply means your turn has not come yet, or one of the data sources SASSA relies on has not responded yet.

How Long Does Pending Usually Last?

There is no fixed guarantee, but based on the pattern across 2025 and 2026, here is what most applicants experience:

1st – 10th of the month Pending is completely normal during this period. SASSA is still running checks for the current month.
11th – 20th of the month Most applications have been finalised by now. If yours is still pending, it is not unusual but worth keeping an eye on.
After the 20th If still pending, consider following up. Most genuine pending cases have been resolved by this point.

Why Your Status Might Stay Pending Longer

Some applications take longer to process than others. Common reasons for extended pending periods include:

  • Data source delays. SASSA relies on external databases from Home Affairs, banks, SARS, UIF, and NSFAS. If any of these systems are slow to respond, your check gets delayed.
  • High application volume. At the start of a new cycle or after system outages, there is a backlog that can push processing times out.
  • Identity issues. If your details do not cleanly match Home Affairs records, the system may flag your application for additional review rather than auto-declining it.
  • New applicant. First-time applications sometimes take longer as the system sets up your profile across all the verification databases.

What to Do While Waiting

  • Check your status regularly. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za every few days. Your status can change at any time.
  • Do not reapply. Submitting a new application will not speed things up. It may actually cause confusion in the system.
  • Keep your phone on. SASSA may send SMS notifications about status changes.
  • Make sure your banking details are correct. If you are approved while your details are wrong, payment will fail. Check and update your banking details if needed.

When and How to Follow Up

If your status is still pending after the 20th of the month, it is reasonable to follow up.

  • Call SASSA: Dial the toll-free number 0800 60 10 11. Have your ID number ready.
  • WhatsApp: Send "Status" to 082 046 8553 on WhatsApp.
  • Visit a SASSA office: Go to your nearest office with your ID document. Staff can look up your application and tell you what is causing the delay.

Be patient with call centre agents – they handle thousands of calls daily. Having your ID number and registered phone number ready will speed up the conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does pending mean I will be approved?

Not necessarily. Pending simply means the checks are not complete. You could be approved or declined once processing finishes.

Can I still get paid if my status is pending?

No. Payment only happens after your status changes to "Approved." You cannot receive money while your application is still pending.

My status was approved last month but pending this month. Why?

Because SASSA reassesses every month from scratch. Last month's approval has no bearing on this month. The system needs to re-verify all your details and bank activity for the new month.

Is there a way to speed up the process?

No. The process is fully automated. No one can speed it up, and anyone claiming they can is running a scam. Just make sure your details are correct and wait for the system to process your application.

If your status changes to declined, see our SASSA declined guide or learn how to appeal.
