SASSA Payment Not Received: What to Do
Your SASSA status shows approved, but the money has not arrived. Here is how to figure out what went wrong and how to get your payment sorted.
First: Confirm You Are Actually Approved
Before assuming your payment is missing, double-check your current status on the SRD portal. Sometimes what feels like a missing payment is actually a pending or declined status for that month.
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za
- Click "Check Status"
- Enter your ID number and registered cellphone number
- Look for the word "Approved" and a payment date
If your status shows Pending or Declined, the issue is not a missing payment – it is that you have not been approved yet for this month.
Common Reasons Payment Has Not Arrived
Your batch has not been processed yet
SRD payments go out in batches between the 23rd and the last day of the month. If you check on the 24th and nothing has arrived, your ID number range may simply be in a later batch. Wait until the end of the month before taking action.
Banking details are incorrect
If the bank account number on your SASSA profile is wrong, closed, or does not match your ID name, the payment bounces. The money goes back to SASSA, and they may try again or hold it until you fix your details. Update your banking details to fix this.
Bank account is inactive or closed
If your bank account has been dormant or closed, the payment will fail. Contact your bank to check the status of your account, reactivate it if needed, then update your details with SASSA.
Name mismatch between SASSA and bank
Your name on the SASSA application must match the name on the bank account exactly. If there is any difference – even a middle name or initial – the bank may reject the payment.
Cash send or eWallet not collected
If SASSA paid you via cash send or eWallet instead of a direct bank deposit, you would have received an SMS with a voucher code. Check your messages. These vouchers expire after a set number of days, so collect them promptly.
System glitch or technical delay
Occasionally, SASSA's payment system experiences technical issues that delay a batch of payments. These usually resolve within a day or two. Check again the next day.
Step-by-Step: What to Do Now
- Wait until the last day of the month. If your status shows approved with a payment date, give it until that date passes. SRD batches can be processed right up to month-end.
- Check your bank account and messages. Look for a deposit, SMS notification, or eWallet/cash send voucher you may have missed.
- Verify your banking details on the SRD portal. Log in and confirm the account number, bank name, and account type are correct. Update them if needed.
- Contact your bank. Ask if a SASSA payment was received and returned due to account issues.
- Call SASSA. Dial 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number ready. Ask them to check the payment status for your specific month. They can see if the payment was sent, bounced, or is still queued.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a payment that bounced back to SASSA?
Yes. If your payment bounced due to incorrect banking details, fix your details on the SRD portal. SASSA typically retries failed payments in the next payment cycle.
How long do I have to collect a cash send payment?
Cash send and eWallet vouchers typically expire after 30 days. If you miss the window, the money returns to SASSA and you may need to contact them to have it reissued.
My status says "Paid" but I did not receive anything. What now?
If SASSA's system shows "Paid" but you have not received the money, the issue is likely on the banking side. Contact your bank first, then call SASSA if the bank has no record of the transaction.
Will I lose my payment for that month if I don't collect it?
Uncollected payments are typically returned to SASSA. You may need to contact them to have the payment reissued. Do not leave payments uncollected for extended periods.
